From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship process.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased openness.

“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure

But, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.

But a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack.

“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response

Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.

Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

However, broader discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that included little new information.
