Our Top Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Place.

Initially, this work may look closer to an arduous scholarly quiz rather than the latest pop album by an artist whose last hit featured an international pop icon. Broken into four separate parts and sung in thirteen tongues, we have a dizzying symphonic album exploring female mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently via the lens of different women saints. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched heavenward here, supported by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the efforts of other pop stars look rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That this album manages to transcend overly academic posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, with complete praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to blend the past and modern styles, its scale are far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, dense compositions, and engrained drama, is an essential sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. When she's tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stirring Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops silent, and there's a spontaneous laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo crashes in with cartoonish impact. The song immediately shifts to the wild track driven by galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in the listener rarely quite understand—or even wish to predict—what you is going next."

Nearly every track finishes in a completely distinct place than where it began. One moment examines the transient nature of fame with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a song echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work begins out dark and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is navigating the line between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is no coincidence that it has achieved her first release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable hits. A song performed entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to collect more and more infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat is repeated on a different powerful track that grows and contracts, weaving layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its built-in excess. This is a deep source of hidden gems that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While other big releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the characters around the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
