As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
