Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
